About Winter in the Timber:

As depicted in Winter in the Timber, the black wolf is a melanistic color variant of the gray wolf, its dark coat produced by a dominantly inherited allele that shifts pigment production toward eumelanin. In North America, this variation is far more common in forested regions than on open tundra, a pattern researchers have linked to an immune-related advantage rather than to camouflage. In places like Yellowstone, black and gray wolves travel, hunt, and breed side by side, and the black coat has persisted across generations as a striking signature of the northern timber.

Lindsey Kustusch brings her signature painterly realism to this winter scene, rendering the black wolf as both specimen and presence against a muted palette of snow and standing timber. The composition rewards close viewing, with fur, shadow, and forest resolving into the quiet, confident brushwork that defines her animal portraiture.
