About the Amur Leopard:
Lindsey Kustusch’s captivating portrait reveals the world’s rarest big cat, the critically endangered Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis).
This elusive predator is known for its pale, cream-colored winter coat, widely spaced rosettes, and long legs. These features are perfect adaptations to the snowy forests of the Russian Far East and northeastern China, where the species now survives in a small transboundary range.
From fewer than 30 individuals in the 1970s, conservation efforts have helped the population rise to approximately 130 mature leopards. While still vulnerable, this recovery highlights the impact of sustained international action.
Kustusch’s intimate rendering invites viewers to connect with this elusive and rare predator, fostering appreciation for one of nature’s most extraordinary creatures and the ongoing work to protect it.
